Radio waves, like light waves, are reflected by many surfaces Reflection occurs when a propagating electromagnetic wave impinges upon an object that has very large dimensions compared to the wavelength of the propagating wave Surfaces of conductive materials reflect signals more than nonconductive materials Radio signal reflection follows the same law as light wave reflection: the angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection When a radio signal is reflected, some loss of the signal is normally incurred, either through absorption or as a result of some of the signal passing into the medium In a manufacturing facility or warehouse, metallic objects, such as heavy machinery, shelving, rolling metallic shutters on dock doors, or metallic conveyors, reflect radio waves When a radio wave hits a material, some of the power is reflected at the surface and some of the power is transmitted into and possibly through the material If the material is a conductor such as metal, almost all of the radio power is reflected within the first few atoms of the material Buildings made of metal, metal-coated glasses, or steel-reinforced concrete, reflect most of the radio energy When radio waves impinge upon a material that is a dielectric (an insulator), some of the power is reflected at the surface but most of the power travels through the material How much power travels through a dielectric depends on both the thickness of the material and its attenuation coefficient Examples of dielectrics are paper, plastic, Teflon, glass, ceramic, and dry wood Pure water is a good dielectric substance

AWR snapshots contain statistics What Oracle calls a statistic is a raw figure, which is meaningless in itself To be useful, statistics must be converted into metrics A metric is two or more statistics correlated together For example, the number of disk reads is a statistic; perhaps the number is two billion By itself, this is useless information What the DBA needs to know is disk reads per second; disk reads per transaction; disk reads per SQL statement; disk reads per session These figures are metrics He/she will also need to do further correlations For example, disk reads per transaction is very useful; it will identify the transactions that are stressing the I/O system and perhaps should be tuned But he/she will need to observe this metric over time and see how it changes perhaps as the SQL is rewritten or indexing structures are changed, the I/O workload will reduce This introduces the baseline A baseline is a stored set of statistics (and metrics) that can be used for comparisons across time As the MMON process saves an AWR snapshot, it generates a large number of metrics from the statistics This happens automatically Creating baselines must be done by the DBA Snapshots are purged after a certain period by default, after eight days A baseline is a pair (possibly several pairs) of snapshots that will be kept indefinitely: until the baseline is deliberately dropped The metrics derived from the

baseline can then be compared with the metrics derived from current activity levels, assisting you with identifying changes in activity and behavior Baselines need to be created for specific events and for normal running For example, if the database has regular end-of-month processing, it would make sense to store the AWR snapshots gathered during each month end as baselines so that throughout the year you can observe how the month end processing activity is changing and determine whether any problems are appearing It also makes sense to store baselines for periods of normal, satisfactory running so that if performance degrades at a later time, information will be available that will help identify what might have changed To create a baseline with Database Control, take the link next to Baselines shown in Figure 13-3 In the figure, this link is 1 , indicating that at the moment there is only one baseline This link will take you to the AWR Baselines window From there, you can define periods to store as baselines

Database Control has interfaces for managing the AWR, but it does so by invoking procedures in a PL/SQL package: DBMA_WORKLOAD_REPOSITORY The procedures can adjust the frequency and persistence of snapshots, generate an ad hoc snapshot (additional to those generated by MMON), create and manipulate baselines, and generate reports on activity between any two snapshots Figure 13-4 shows the use of some of the procedures in the package
